OpenMoko Neo1973

By | December 31, 2007

I just updated my Neo1973 with a new rootfs image (from 2007-12-25) and now I’m able to receive and make calls! I have problems with the audio that it used to work with the previous image, I can’t hear any sound from the media player nor from the stylus when gets in contact with the touchscreen. I still have a lot to test since I haven’t had time to play enough with it. I want to try the bluetooth connection, but the OpenMoko projects don’t seem updated… DirectFB will be another nice thing to try.

    Hi,

For information about OpenMoko software you can go here: http://www.openmoko.org

If you’re interested in buying a FreeRunner (the mobile phone that runs OpenMoko) you can go here:
    http://www.openmoko.com

You can emulate OpenMoko in different ways. This link describes them:
    http://www.openmoko.org/wiki/Category:Emulation

You can join the mailing lists:
    http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/

specially the ‘community’ list that is very active.

Or you can connect to the IRC channel in FreeNode (#openmoko). There are always 300+ people, several of them are the OpenMoko developers and they are very kind and willing to help people interested in this project.

    Hi,

If you refer to the neo1973 as the development model (in fact, it’s a prototype) you are out of luck because as far as I know the are not producing it anymore. May be you could find one in ebay.

However, the FR is cheaper than the neo when it was launched.

    Hi Peguliar,

Do we have any IDE or something like that to work with kernel
and file system or frontend applications in free runner / openmoko.Like My only interest in this prodcut is to develop n play wiht linux mobile point of view and i am very interested in gtk+ and qtopia and may be some custom modules i want to build some kernel modules /drivers and let open- moke interact with other hardware / devices via USB maybe.

    Hi,

I finally got the openmoko based neo freerunner phone.First of all i think the phone is costly .If they want to make it popular they should bring the price down.Second it is a bare phone nothing comes preloaded.I have some issues .

1)After booting the phone wiht all the proper hardware(sim / sdcard / batteries fully charge).I tried to make the call it’s poping error dialog with messaged
    ” Dialer error : with s signature
    org.openmoko.phonekit.dialer ”

    2) Though it is showing sms count but it is not opening sms.

    3)couldn’t open contact book eihter.

    Hi,

During this week I’ll receive my Freerunner, meanwhile I’m still playing with my neo1973.

The Freerunner, being a smartphone, is more expensive than a normal cell phone, but it’s not very expensive considering what it can do. The iPhone is much more expensive, its hardware is slightly better that the Freerunner, but you bascially cannot touch the software that is a BIG disadvantage.

The software that comes preloaded is very basic and has several bugs. You should upgrade it with one of the latest versions of the different images. Choose the one that fits better for you:

However, at this moment, if you want a fully functional software install the Qtopia image that contains must of the functionality that you expect from this kind of phone and is quite stable:

For solving the issues that you currently have or could have in the future, or just for asking any question regarding the Freerunner it would be better if you subscribe to the OpenMoko community list. There is a lot of people that could help you in the right way:

If you want a faster way you can use the Freenode IRC channel #openmoko

    Hope this helps.
    Regards.
